NXGen Research Facility is an Authority-backed corporation that researches the root of all abilities in unORDINARY. It has multiple branches including one in Arcwood.
Plot[]
NXGen is first mentioned by Fyora. Seraphina's father, a business partner of NXGen, wanted his daughter to apply for an internship there,[1] but her application was rejected.[2]
During the Monster Arc, the Newscaster reported that two months prior, a top secret research project funded and led by the authorities that NXGen was working on had been put on hold, and much of the research data and equipment was either stolen or destroyed (likely by Spectre), leading to a hiring freeze.[2]
On her date with Darren, Leilah told him that her company, ZetaSci, was not able to compete with NXGen, as they are big and backed by the Authorities. [3]
During his investigation, detective Simon broke into one of NXGen's facilities to find they are holding experiments on a missing person.[4] Said investigation costed his life[5], but his findings and evidences of her existence there gave her family the closure they needed on her disappearance.[6][7][8][9]
Seraphina along with some other agents are tasked by Spectre to steal their research data. The plan to infiltrate the facility involved disguising herself as a guest scientist, Dr. Meryl.[10]
After some preparation the next morning, Seraphina managed to sneak into NXGen, where she met Spectre's insider, Stacey. The mole then briefed her on the next phase of their plan: entering the highly-surveilled room. She was to enter the room at the same time as the head of Conversion Research for NXGen, Dr. Kelley. Using Time Manipulation, Seraphina managed to infiltrate the room, before subduing Dr. Kelley.[11]
Seraphina successfully stole the data regarding Conversion Technology, but she also snooped on some very sensitive file from NXGen's database. It listed the possible basis of their research: someone who goes by Patient Jane, who were being held at their undisclosed branch, as well as her level and ability. Before leaving the room to reconvene with Stacey at the safe zone, Seraphina hid Dr. Kelley's body and snatched his ID. Stacey then detailed her on the final stage of their plan, stealing the vials containing the sample for Conversion Technology. Despite her ability briefly glitched, which caused the alarm to go off, Seraphina completed the assignment and escaped the NXGen Facility with her team.[12] They had a rendezvous with another Spectre agent to hand him the spoils.[13]
Employees[]
The only known employees are a planted agent from Spectre and Dr. Kelley. However, Seraphina's father is their business partner and he knows them well enough to get his daughter an interview for an internship with them, despite their hiring freeze.
Jane appears to be in one of their facilities, as the source of their technology. She was there after voluntarily surrendering herself to the Authorities, so they left her husband and son alone.
Research[]
NXGen specializes in the research of the root of abilities. It is not known what they have discovered so far but they have something called "conversion technology". Research is kept in a documentation as well as a physical sample in beakers.
Their conversion technology seems to use Jane and her ability as the basis of the research. The purpose of the Technology is to convert and transform the aura of a target into any other ability chosen. To control variations of abilities, task forces were made. While progress had slow pacing, there were quite a few breakthroughs. For example, if a weaker person were to use the technology, the tech can only convert a portion of the target's aura to another ability, but it is inefficient and a notable aura is lost in the process. Only those with high aura outputs (i.e. high-tiers) are successful in the conversion process. Moreover, it seems that the conversion needs some sort of ability source to take reference from. The successful conversions are regeneration, speed, and fire claw, but there are untested higher level sources like Lightning and Phantom Walk. There are failed sources such as Future Sight and Telepathy. The current theory is that abilities that aren't physical in nature cannot be converted, but there were success with abilities with partial physical attributes. Their research is using aura channels, so NXGen is using Jane as the basis of their research.
Naming[]
NXGen probably comes from the phrase "Next Generation", referring either to the company's futuristic and ambitious goals or how their research will benefit future generations.
