Medium is an ability that's used to determine what's become of individuals of interest.
Description[]
Medium is a mysterious ability, and is one of the few in unORDINARY to not be confined by the mortal coil. When a person is accosted, there's an energy remains tied to the location of the attack for some time afterward, even if it was a fatal encounter. A user of Medium can zero in on said energy to get a clear picture of what happened to the victim.
A user can also use that same energy to track down the victim, living or dead, to their current location.[1]

Successful usage of this ability allows the user to see a perfect reproduction of a morbid scene. They not only can determine what happened to a victim of an attack during within a specific timeframe, but whether or not there were bystanders during the event in question. Even a professional clean-up of a crime scene cannot dependably prevent a user from discovering what happened.
The same can be said about attempting to hide the deceased, as Scarlette was able to locate William despite him being buried by his killers.
It appears that the likelihood of successfully watching somebody's final moments is proportionally linked to the time that's passed since their demise. It does not appear that Medium can reproduce any auditory feedback, meaning all scenes are silent. As Scarlette made clear to Cameron, using this ability requires great concentration if there's any hope of overcoming these hurdles.[1]

The "lingering energy" that Scarlette said she tapped into is not elaborated on. It may be the remnants of the aura left behind after Jude used his ability, but the trail that led to William's body did not circle back.
Another possibility is that it's some life force that Medium can make use of, which could provide some link even to people incapable of producing aura.[1]
