Synopsis[]

Keene pays a visit to Headmaster Vaughn’s house for an evening dinner with a pie. During the meal, Keene asks if Vaughn has thought of starting a family, but Vaughn says in a position like his, it’s hard to not be a burden to those around him, and he’s content to work on his garden. When Vaughn poses the same question in return, Keene says that all his dates ghost him when they learn about his history, but Vaughn claims that there are those who would understand that Keene was born to circumstances out of his control, that being a late bloomer doesn’t automatically make him a monster, and that Keene would benefit from building some worthwhile connections; Keene responds that he has Vaughn, who practically raised him, but Vaughn says he means people closer to Keene’s age.

Before Keene can answer, he senses a presence outside the house, and informs Vaughn they are surrounded. Vaughn calmly acknowledges this, and upon hearing a knock at the door, goes to answer it. Keene attempts to stop Vaughn, worried they will hurt him, but Vaughn assures him that he’ll be fine. When Vaughn opens the door, he is greeted by Byron and Kassandra of the Bureau. Kassandra informs Vaughn that he has been charged with negligence, intentional misguidance of his students, and conspiring against the Authorities. She then provides him with a copy of their findings, including a piece of paper that contains Vaughn’s true name, Victor, and details from his past. Byron informs Vaughn that they have been instructed to escort him to the Bureau for further questioning, that they have a warrant to search his home, and that while the case is active, his position as Wellston High’s Headmaster will be suspended. Vaughn agrees to come to the Bureau and explain himself, and Byron thanks him for his cooperation, while Kassandra notices Keene’s presence. While Kassandra and Byron escort Vaughn to a police car, other officers begin to search Vaughn’s house, while Keene watches on.

After Vaughn is handcuffed and placed in the back of a car, Byron warns Kassandra to take caution despite Vaughn’s compliance, and Kassandra nods in agreement before getting in the front seat while Byron gets in another car. While en route to the Bureau, Kassandra takes her chance to ask some questions of Vaughn, inquiring about his relationship to Keene. Vaughn reveals that Keene was one of his students from his days as a readjustment instructor, and that Keene was not only a juvenile delinquent, but a late-bloomer with a violent history. Kassandra notes that Keene has come a long way if he has gone from that to being Wellston’s head of security, and Vaughn states that while he’s done his best to guide Keene over the years, Keene has become a bit overprotective. Meanwhile, back at Vaughn’s residence, Keene is revealed to have forcibly subdued the officers in Vaughn’s home, after which he commandeers a police vehicle, apparently intent on following Vaughn.

Kassandra believes Vaughn has done a lot for Keene, and Vaughn states that he has learned the hard way that you can never force someone to change; it requires both willingness and time, or tragic results could follow. Kassandra asks Vaughn what adjustment strategies he used on his students, and Vaughn confesses that the course involved the use absolute mental force to prevent recidivism. Vaughn states that months of repetitive psychological torment can destroy anyone, and that for years he watched as the poor misguided teens had their confidence and tenacity crushed by his hand, as their life itself drained away. Stunned, Kassandra asks if Vaughn is exaggerating, but Vaughn insists otherwise and claims he resigned after numerous denials to his proposals to change the courses, and that Keene was his last student. Kassandra realizes that Vaughn’s reason for resisting the Bureau is to spare his students from the readjustment courses he once administered. Vaughn expresses a belief that everyone is born with open minds and good intentions, and laments that their society encourages differently, a sentiment which Kassandra silently agrees with.

Before the conversation can continue, one of the nearby police vehicles is launched into the air by an explosion. Kassandra realizes that the explosion came from the ground and barely manages to prevent their vehicle from being hit by a second blast. Upon emerging from the car, Kassandra is confronted by Keene, who has caught up to the convoy in his stolen vehicle and demands for Vaughn to be released.
