Synopsis[]
A while back, Blyke and Isen watched as John and Seraphina were whisked away by an older guy they've never seen before. Worried about this potential threat from Spectre, they had agreed to consult Kuyo about this occurrence.
They, along with Remi, meet with him. Kuyo pulls up a picture of the guy and identifies him as Kayden, a guy he goes to university with. Kuyo describes his peer as the last guy he'd expect to be involved with ability disabling and kidnapping. Then again, this report does confirm that Kayden is in fact keeping big secrets. Remi chimes in and says that there's still plenty that they don't understand about Spectre. Blyke adds that for all the danger the organization poses, John and Seraphina seem to be on good terms with Kayden. Kuyo suspects that there's conflict within Spectre's upper ranks, and that John and Seraphina have gotten themselves caught in the power struggle. Kuyo believes that this information will help him towards squeezing the rest of the story out of Kayden later. The high schoolers are a little disturbed by the phrasing he uses.
Kuyo then reaches into his bag and tells Remi that he brought something for her. He pulls out a book she recognizes as "Unordinary." Kuyo tells her it was the very copy owned by Rei, and says that she ought to inherit it. Isen blocks him and shoves the book back into his chest, assertively telling him that she won't be taking it. Remi asks what his deal is, and Isen warns her that she was about to accept an infamously cursed book. One peek and she and Blyke were certain to go off risking their lives in some stupid crusade rather than their sound, low-key strategy. Kuyo asks Isen if he really thinks that being a vigilante is stupid. Without hesitating, Isen says yes, because he prefers to live. Remi scoffs and says that Unordinary is just a book. She is also adamant about holding on to one of her brother's keepsakes. Remi swears that she won't read it if Isen's that worried. (Isen feels his attempted rescue is a little underappreciated).
That night, Remi brushes her hair in preparation for bed. Her eyes turn to Unordinary just laying on her dresser. Curiosity gets the best of her, and she curls up in her bed for an illegal bedtime story.
The next day, another Safe House session comes to a close. As Blyke bids farewell to the other members, Evie and Roland come up to him and ask about the frequent absences of John and Seraphina, and what it means for the planned self-defense course due to start this week. Blyke only says that they've had a lot on their plate lately, but they could be expected back soon. They take his word for it, and go on their way. Blyke then notices the one student remaining behind; it's Remi, sound asleep at her desk. She wakes up to the sight of Blyke, who tells her that they won't be able to make excuses to hide the ongoing Spectre conspiracy their friends are in for much longer. Remi is worried for their well-being, while Blyke brings up the so-called interview they needed his suit for. He's convinced that it's a cover for some sort of deal going down, Remi wonders why they wouldn't just share it with the rest of them. Blyke agrees, seeing as the disaster in Rowden gave them plenty of right to be in the know. Remi's drowsiness derails the whole conversation, prompting Blyke to ask if she's tired because she stayed up late...with her nose in a certain book.
Later, John enters the dorms and prepares to break it to Blyke that his suit didn't make it back in one piece. He walks over to Blyke's room, wherein an intense exchange occurs. Remi forcefully gives Unordinary to Blyke, who's disappointed that she read it. Remi is apologetic about giving into temptation, and astonished that she couldn't put the book down. Blyke supposes that the book didn't do anything to her, other than turn her into a zombie. Remi begins to insist that she really enjoyed the story when they hear a knock. Blyke hastily goes to answer it, neglecting a detail that makes Remi panic. John and apologizes for not bringing the whole suit, but his eye catches something familiar. Blyke is horrified to realize that the banned book was still in his grip. Remi pulls it away, far too late to hide it. Both are hoping John it escaped his notice. Unfortunately, he promptly asks where it came from. Blyke deflects the question and tells him not to worry about the suit before slamming the door. John stands stunned. It's been a while, but that book was unmistakably the one written by his father.
