Synopsis[]
John continues to spend time in the Safe House, under the keen vigil of Blyke. He is frustrated at how tight-lipped Seraphina has been about her problems, and that Arlo somehow knows about these problems. He wonders if he has become such a burden to the other high-tiers, and sub-consciously snaps a pencil. Blyke reprimands him for this, as it might scare the Safe House students.
Arlo arrives as John leaves, and asks Blyke what the former King was doing in the Safe House, to which Blyke explains that John had been attending the Safe House for some time now, because he thought something big was going to happen. Arlo is surprised that John was able to swallow his pride and join a place full of people that detest him.
Later, John runs into Zeke and his lackey beating up some low rankers. He is afraid to use his powers to mediate, but remembers his father's advice that he should judge how much strength to use to end conflict. Just as Zeke is about to finish the two low rankers, John steps in and orders him to stand down. Zeke, cowed by John's presence, retreats with Mardin. John walks away, as the two low rankers thank him.
Irritated at how little he knows about his friend's predicament, John decides to tail Seraphina the next day, going disguised to the metro station and boarding the train she is in.
