Summary[]
John watches as Adrion tries to negotiate with the irate duo. They remind Adrion that they bailed him and his mom out of some hot water, and refuse to accept that they cannot get a discount at U-Mart in return. These "BOGO Boys" push for Adrion to sidestep his disapproving manager and give them one under the table. Adrion pleads for them to consider just how badly he needs this job. Around the corner, John remains unnoticed. He pants as memories of his violent past in New Bostin plague him once more. Trembling, he tries to figure out what the right thing for him to do is when BOGO Blue escalates the shake down.
Adrion asks why they keep harassing him and his mother when they've paid them back all they've borrowed already. BOGO Blue punches Adrion in the face and makes it clear that it's not his place to decide when debts are settled. After a moment's hesitation, John finally approaches the scene and tells the thugs to leave Adrion be. All eyes turn to him, and Adrion identifies John by name. The BOGO Boys boldly walk up to this friend of Adrion's and tell him off for interfering with their business. John trembles even more as he tries to keep it together, which the loan sharks take as a sign of weakness. They mock John for falling silent after talking a big game. John then reiterates Adrion's statement that there was nothing that could be done for them at U-Mart, and beating him wouldn't change that. BOGO Blue dares John to stop whilst shoving him as BOGO Green watches in silent approval. As the pair mock John even more for being a pushover, Adrion watches with trepidation. He's well aware of what will happen if the situation isn't defused immediately. He calls out to the BOGO Boys, urging them to leave John out of this. Blue reminds Adrion that John was the one who got himself involved, and they weren't about to let him go unscathed. When John gets punched in the face, Adrion cries out for them to stop. John looks at his old friend, who assures him that he doesn't have to be here any longer. The BOGO Boys say otherwise, and decide to use John as additional leverage to get the sweet discount they were after. Adrion knows that their disregarding his pleas will lead to dire consequences for them and who-knows how many more. He dreads having to relive the failed coup of New Bostin High. But John inches closer to the brink with each passing second of this conflict. He looks straight into his smiling assailant's blue eyes and is apalled when he sees his old self looking back. John isn't even able to register the mocking words being spoken to him as the desire to bust heads wells up within him.
Blue notices John clenching his fist and tensing up, but remains confident that he's in control even as John grabs his wrist. But Adrion desperately demands that they stop antagonizing John. Green decides that their mark has gotten too outspoken for his own good, and resumes pummeling him. This is the last straw for John, who curses both of them out and orders them to stop. Blue doesn't even have time to consider the order when John knees him in the stomach and punches him in the face with tremendous force. John swiftly pulls Green off of Adrion and floors him with a punch as well. As Green stares in shock, Blue rises and vows to make John pay. John responds by picking up Green and throwing him at his cohort before knocking them both down with a kick to Green's torso. John doesn't notice that Adrion is taking no comfort in this rescue. Blue has finally realized that John was going to have the final word in this dispute, and swears that if he's allowed to leave then Adrion will never be harassed again. His ensuing pleas are ignored as John picks him up and knocks him out. John angrily expresses his disgust at the sick amusement the duo took in abusing low-tiers and raises his foot to stomp on the unconscious Blue. But before he can bring his foot down, Adrion yells for John to stop. John is doubly-surprised when Adrion throws his arms around him and pulls him away. Shocked and ashamed that he let things go this far again, John pulls himself together as best he can while Adrion watches nervously. Seeing that Green is getting up, John orders him to pick up his friend and get lost. Green wisely complies. When the BOGO Boys are gone, John turns to Adrion and surprises him by asking if he's okay. Adrion thanks him for the assist.
