Summary[]
William is off to see his editor and bids John goodbye. John pours himself a cup of milk and prepares a toasted bread for his breakfast. He walks into the living room and sees the new punching bag. As he examines it, he remembers Seraphina suggesting he give himself another chance. He tries to punch the bag but his hand stops midway and slumps, as he feels that he isn’t quite ready yet.
Later, on a walk outside, John reflects on his father’s words, that he has control of his life from here on and he should work on what he wants from himself. He thinks about how he always denies things he doesn’t want to hear, how he is the first to walk away because of his inability to take criticism. He wonders when he will finally become responsible for his own actions.
He reaches Claire’s apartment and knocks on the door. He says that he doesn’t want to leave things the way they are now, and he requests her to listen to him. Claire appears on the sidewalk next to her house, returning from grocery shopping. Just as she wonders why he is still here, she undergoes a vision in which a uniform-clad John enters an office to see an old man with white hair and gold eyes. The old man turns his head to see John, and Claire’s vision ends.
John turns around to see his old friend for the first time in years. He asks her if she just had a vision, but she tells him that she is done sharing her visions to anyone else, as they just cause harm. John reflects on how Claire’s visions were the fuel for his destruction of New Bostin, and decides that she is correct.
Claire repeats that she didn’t want to see him, and questions why he was still here. John replies that he has decided to take responsibility for the wake of destruction he left behind. Claire listens silently. John continues to say that he was so self-absorbed that he didn’t realize how much Claire was trying to help him. He apologizes profusely for his prior behaviour. He concludes by saying that he has decided to become a better person.
Claire thinks about Seraphina’s words, that John had in fact changed for the better in Wellston before his downfall. John asks Claire if he can make it up to her in any way, but Claire refuses, saying she wants John out of her life. John is crestfallen, but Claire says that she is glad that John has decided to improve, for there is someone in the world who cares for him very deeply.
John asks who this person is, and Claire replies that it is Seraphina. As a shocked John listens on, Claire explains that Seraphina contacted her to figure out what was going on with John. Seraphina even defended John after Claire told her about his actions. She concludes by telling John he owes a lot to Seraphina. John is astounded.
Claire walks back to the door of her apartment, and bids John farewell, and wishes him the best. With that, she closes the door. John stares at the door quietly, and turns around. He sighs and remembers what Claire had just told him, about Seraphina’s selfless supporting of him. He smiles and recognizes that he does in fact owe his best friend, Seraphina.
Later, John visits U-Mart to catch up with Adrion. Certain that his old friend is on the clock, he prepares to open the door. Suddenly, he hears Adrion’s voice coming from somewhere outside. He goes round the corner of the building to see two thugs holding him by his collar. John’s mind is filled with fear for his friend’s safety.
