- Claire

This is the 229th chapter of unORDINARY.

Summary[]

Claire slumps to the ground, wondering what John is doing back in New Bostin. Without answering the doorbell, she calls Seraphina. Claire remembers Wellston’s Ace telling her that she would regain her abilities soon, and wonders whether she was able to get through to John. To her dismay, Seraphina is unavailable, so she decided to pretend that she isn’t there, hoping that this way, John will leave. John calls out for her, and Claire ultimately chooses to answer him, and asks him what he wants. John asks her if she approached him just because he was going to be powerful. Claire denies this, and says that she approached him because they were going through similar low-tier problems.

John remembers Adrion telling him that Claire was using him two years ago, and says that he doesn’t believe Claire, and wants to know what really happened. Claire insists that she spoke the truth, but when John denies this once again, she mocks John, telling him that whatever best fit his narrative was true. Seething, John asks her why she just doesn’t tell him the real truth, to which Claire coldly responds that she already did, it was he who was unwilling to hear it. She was running out of patience. John screams that he is too confused to understand anything, or trust anyone. Claire remarks that this is his problem and has nothing to do with her.

John fires back, telling her that his descent started with her meeting him. Claire clenches her fist and asks John to stop playing the victim. He was given awesome power, and he was responsible for how it brought the downfall of him and others. Claire helped John master his ability, but she had no control over how he used it. John protests that Claire rallied up people behind his back because she no longer had control over him. Claire, losing all remaining patience, calls John an idiot for believing everything was about power and control. John fights back, asking her why she didn’t just talk to him about it. Claire mirthlessly tells John that she had confronted him many times, but he simply ridiculed or even beat her up.

In spite of this, she still wanted to help him. She went to the teachers and even William for help. John has flashbacks of Seraphina telling him that he only responded to force, and not words. Claire, now crying freely, tells John that she was foolish to ever believe she could save John. It would have been best to leave him alone. Even after all this time, he still wouldn’t listen to her. John has flashbacks of the happy times he shared with Claire in New Bostin, and embraces the fact that she never turned on him. It was he who deserted her. Tears begin to well up in his eyes. Claire cries out, telling John to leave, as she wants nothing more to do with him. John wordlessly leaves.

Later, John visits the park. He sits on a bench and acknowledges that he was even more of a monster than he previously thought. He was too blind to realize how much Claire and Adrion were trying to help him. He clutches his head. William arrives, and expresses concern for John’s long absence. He came to find his son. He sits on the bench beside John and notices his son’s apparent sorrow. He puts an arm around John and asks him to share his problems with him. John wonders out aloud how he could ever make up for what he had done.
