- John's internal thoughts

This is the 222nd chapter of unORDINARY.

Summary

Arlo tries to break free of John’s vines. Zeke snidely remarks that Arlo and Remi were the ones plotting against John, and now that they’ve been caught, they want to flee. John roars at Arlo, telling him that he’s not leaving until John allows him to do so. John summons a barrage of vine daggers and fires them at Arlo. Arlo endures the attack thanks to his armour passive, and vows not to use his Barrier, lest John should become capable of using it as well. An annoyed John knows that Arlo can’t keep his ability from John’s grasp forever.

Remi hurriedly tells Arlo that they have to leave before it is too late, but Arlo tells her that the vines aren’t even letting him budge. Arlo tells Remi to leave, saying that he’ll take the loss on his own. Remi refuses. An angered John sends another volley of vine daggers, this time targeting Remi. Remi has no choice but to activate her ability and dodge the attacks. Nonetheless, she gets hit in multiple places and starts bleeding. She advances through the openings in John’s attacks and sends a spark of electricity, shocking the King. The vine binding Arlo loosens, but Remi is slashed on her hand by one of the daggers. She stands defiantly in front of John, who is now able to use Lightning.

Meanwhile Zeke is chortling at how the fighting of the three high-tiers is so entertaining. John curses and fires a tendril of electricity at Arlo. Before Arlo can decide whether this attack can be tanked, Remi stands in the way and grounds John’s lightning. However, John is one step ahead, and ties her wrists using Vines. Arlo implores John to leave Remi out of the battle, but to no avail, as the King has raised several Electrical Vine Swords that he is about to attack Remi with. Just when it looks like Remi’s doom is certain, Arlo tanks the swords, but injures his arm.

Arlo only has time to look up, when he sees an airborne John ready to unleash even more Electrical Vine Swords. John taunts Arlo just as the Swords are about to hit that he cannot hide Barrier forever. And he is right, as Arlo finally activates Barrier, causing both John and Arlo to take tremendous reflective damage. John yells triumphantly and charges up some Lightning, which he hurls at the Barrier. But Remi grounds the attack from inside the Barrier. An infuriated John comes up close and starts punching Arlo’s Barrier. Arlo coughs blood, and Remi, who cannot bear the sight anymore, pleads John to stop fighting with them.

John mirthlessly tells Remi that it is very easy to ask for a ceasefire when defeat is certain. Remi counters this by telling John that he has made his point, the Royals have understood the low-ranker’s pain, and have opened the Safe House to alleviate it. John has flashbacks of his discussions with Remi, and decides that he doesn’t believe her, and that the Royals are monsters like him. He tells Remi that she never cared, and that she should stop pretending like she ever did. An enraged Remi tells John that if anything, he doesn’t care, as all he does is preach about how high-rankers abuse low-rankers, while doing nothing to stop it. He is the one holding the school back.

John considers this, but acknowledges that the Wellston students don’t deserve any better. John tells Remi to shut up, and fires another volley of Energy Daggers at Arlo’s cracking barrier, destroying it. Arlo is in deep pain, unable to do anything. John is about to deal the finishing blow in the form of several Electric Vine Swords, when to his deep shock, they just hit the ground, and Arlo and Remi are nowhere to be seen. Footsteps echo behind him, and he turns around to see his former best friend Seraphina, with her ability back, who paused time to save Arlo and Remi. Seraphina tells John that they need to talk.
