I feel like I've learned more in these past two months than I ever will.
- Seraphina
This is the 219th chapter of unORDINARY.
Summary[]
Though Remi is touched by what Arlo said, she can't help but notice the sad look in his eyes as he says it. She asks what's eating him, and he opens up. Arlo asks her if she had already known that the Authorities were involved in the murders of Rei and all the other vigilantes. She confirms her awareness of that situation. Arlo reflects on how much respect he had for Rei, and that such an altruistic leader didn't deserve to die. Arlo offers sincere condolences for Remi's terrible loss, an apologizes for having dismissed the truth she was trying to tell him for so long. Now that he's accepted it, he feels that he should be investing his energy into Safe House after all. He urges Remi not to give up on her idea, and swears he'll support her.
After school, Seraphina and Evie exit the main building together. Evie asks if Seraphina would like to grab some drinks with her and Roland. Seraphina turns her down, saying she has a prior engagement. They bid each other farewell. Seraphina checks the text message from her Spectre contacts informing her where to meet. She wonders if she's really on track to regaining her ability. She soon reaches the park and sees Kayden reading on a bench. As they greet each other, Seraphina realizes that he must be a university student based on his book bag and the textbook he was studying. They prepare to depart, and Kayden confirms to Seraphina he'll be teleporting them to their next location to avoid being detected. They arrive in what appears to be a laboratory, fully stocked with medical equipment and and supplies. As Seraphina tries in vain to determine where she could be, Leilah greets her while decked out in lab garments. Leilah thanks her sister for trusting her despite the influx of unfamiliar elements from the world of Spectre. Seraphina corrects Leilah's misconceptions, telling her that it's not trust that coaxed her to this arrangement. Things weren't hashed out between them, but Seraphina says she's willing to put all that beef aside if she could move forward with her life. She'd be better off, in fact. Holding onto grudges never helped anyone. Leilah can accept this, and motions to get things started.
After changing into a hospital gown, Seraphina apprehensively approaches Leilah. Leilah asks how she's feeling, and Seraphina asking if this will really restore her ability reveals that she's nervous as can be. Leilah tells her to relax, and asks how long it's been since she's been drugged. Seraphina answers that she's counted the days, which tallied up to a total of two months. And for those two months, there's been a whirlwind of painful emotions. Denial, grief, and stagnation of character. She thinks of how John was the cause of the worst of it, and says that she's ready for it all to be over. Leilah apologizes for not reaching out to her sooner. Seraphina admits that it was probably for the best. If nothing else, the past two months have been the greatest learning experience of her life. She thinks back to how life as she knew it turned backwards in all sorts of ways. There was the first escape from students hungry for a shot at her, and John subsequently explaining their mindset. Then there was time she was kidnapped and tortured, while Illena blantantly "educated" her on the true attitudes most had towards the Royals. The hopelessness of her situation as illustrated by Clio. The strong were at a loss as to fix this problem and avoiding conflict was no longer an option for the weak. Yet her peers hadn't given up. They too wished to make up for lost time. And they fought their base urges to try and make it happen. And it all might not have started were it not for the boy who formerly advocated Unordinary. Seraphina regrets having dodged major responsibilities of freeing society from fear and oppression. Now there was a change in herself that she wanted to pass onto the world. Leilah, smiling at this display of determination, asks Seraphina one last time if she was truly willing to comply for the conditions for this treatment. Seraphina's conviction holds strong.
Lying in bed and hooked up to an IV, Seraphina asked about the anesthesia administration. Leilah explained that the process would take time, but Seraphina wouldn't have to wait to see the end. Seraphina grumbled that the word choice was poor, but Leilah kept saying there was nothing to worry about. In order to help assuage Seraphina's fears, Leilah prompted her to share the first of the changes she was hoping to make. Seraphina speaks of a friend who happens to be very lost right now. Without naming him, she describes how his hostility is causing harm to everyone, and how he doesn't even realize how he's suffering the most because of it. Leilah remarks that this friend must be really important to Seraphina. Just before she lulls off to unconsciousness, Seraphina recalls the good times with John and says that he really is...
