Summary[]
Arlo, still in shock, denounces the notion of the Authorities working with EMBER to be impossible. Kayden is compelled to ask why he feels this way. When Arlo says that he got confirmation that the Authorities are working to take down those criminals, Kayden advises him to give his sources more scrutiny. Arlo thinks back to his aunt, unable to fathom that she would lie about being involved in anything so heinous. He turns to Seraphina, expecting her to back him up. Instead, Seraphina says that she herself had suspected the connection for weeks. Just for reading Unordinary, the Authorities suspended her for a month and interrogated her numerous times. They determined that she needed to take one of their attitude adjustment courses, and dropped the case of her ability-loss when her enrollment was blocked. All signs pointed to them having never intended to help her. All they cared about was making sure that high-tiers who didn't march to the beat of their drum were suppressed. Namely, superheroes. Witnessing Seraphina's deductive skills at work made it apparent to Kayden just why Leilah was so adamant to get her to work with them.
Arlo stood frozen as the beliefs he held on to all his life crumbled under the weight of logic. It now made sense why his peers didn't share his trust in the Authorities. Kayden snapped Arlo out of his funk by asking if he was alright. It occurred to Kayden that Arlo went from level-headed to flustered when the Authorities were brought up. He wondered whether this was due to a personal connection.
Leilah walked in at that moment, glad to have finally given those Spectre agents the slip. Apologizing for anything she might have interrupted, Leilah approached Kayden to ascertain his condition. He's doing well, and tells her that she was right to assume he wouldn't have been able to transport three others. After chastising him for never learning his limits, Leilah turns to the teenagers. She sees Seraphina looking at her apprehensively. Leilah tries to reach out to her. Seraphina grabs her by the hand, and demands to know just what she was being asked to get into. Leilah reviews the mess they were caught in. The organization was currently an unorganized mess. Leilah says she's heartbroken to see her beloved Spectre go bad after years of service. Seraphina understands the pain, as she went though the same thing with John. Leilah desires only to restore things back to the way they were, but she wasn't making any headway. Members were going behind her back, and not even Kayden's loyalty changed the fact that she was hopelessly outnumbered. It was never her intention to get Seraphina involved, but the ambush made that point moot. Leilah asked if Seraphina was willing to help reunite Spectre. Seraphina asked what was the plan after accomplishing that objective. Leilah answered that they would only have that conversation later, since it wouldn't matter if they couldn't get past step one. But she adds that she understands if Seraphina wasn't ready to make this decision today, and allows her to think it over. Having taken more than enough of their time, Leilah offers to escort the two safely back to Wellston. Seraphina chafes at the fact that she couldn't pry the whole story from Leilah. But with the Authorities unwilling to provide the support she needed to recover her ability, Seraphina sees no other option. She calls out to Leilah, and tells her she'll accept the offer. There was just one condition: under no circumstances was she ever going to use the Ability Disabler on anybody. Leilah accepted these terms.
Elaine sits in her dorm, frantically awaiting contact from her friends. After a long wait, they finally return from their trip. Seraphina thinks back to the moment she and her sister parted ways. Leilah spoke one last time, thanking Seraphina for coming out to meet with her. She promised to be available for discussion as she made immediate preparations for Seraphina's treatment. Seraphina wonders just what kind of treatment to expect from them. Elaine runs up to them, relief turning to shock at the sight of blood on Arlo yet again. She pulls out her phone to report their condition, but Arlo stops her and asks only healing from her.
