- Seraphina

This is the 215th chapter of unORDINARY.

Summary[]

As the Spectre strike force begins attacking the Barrier, Arlo surmises from the force of their blows that they must be mid-tiers. This deduction makes him even more aware of his weakened state. He warns Seraphina and Leilah that they have to be ready to defend themselves when he powers down.

His skills in fighting as a mid-tier being a bit rusty, Arlo conjures a wide disk to use as a shield. He blocks an attack and counters with a punch. Just as this attacker is knocked back, another strikes from above, and manages to slice Arlo from his unprotected side. With the absence of his passive body armor proven, Arlo breaks out some old technical combat techniques. When the knife-wielding attacker goes in for a stab, Arlo catches her arm, punches her in the face, and disarms her. He hears three more agents going in for an attack. Arlo hurls their colleague's knife and hits one in the shoulder before putting up another shield. While he's preoccupied with defending himself from the front, another unnoticed agent phases through the floor from behind, brandishing a syringe of Ability Disabler. Before Arlo can fully comprehend the sneak attack, Seraphina rushes in and punches the now-tangible agent in the face. The syringe falls to the ground, where Seraphina promptly crushes it underfoot. She declares that nobody deserved to be condemned to a powerless existence. Undettered by the fact that his disabler was now lost, the Spectre agent tells resistance is futile. He doesn't say much more before Leilah knocks him out. Seraphina recognizes the speed and strength displayed in the attack as attributes of the Time Manipulation ability that runs in their family. She misses being able to move like that.

Leilah dodges another incoming attack at the last second, and uses Time Manipulation to swiftly knock out the assailant and the four colleagues backing him up. But one look at the incoming agents is enough to tell her that there would be no end to Spectre's assault. She tells the others that they need to get out of here now. Their way out is blocked by some agents, but Arlo still has plenty of strength to knock them aside. As they rush towards the alley's exit, Arlo asks Leilah why there are so many people after her. She answers that it's all three of them being targeted, not just her. Arlo amends the question to reflect their predicament, to which Seraphina answers that they're high-tiers whose abilities Spectre wanted to disable. As they approach the exit point, a figure suddenly materializes before them. Arlo wearily goes to take out what he assumes is yet another Spectre agent out to get them. But Leilah shouts for him to stand down, as this new figure is on her side. Arlo's fist halts, much to this stranger's surprise and relief. Leilah urges everyone not to stop running, and asks her colleague why he didn't wait for them like she told him to. He responds that they were taking too long, so he got worried. Leilah asks him how much energy he has left. He thinks he has enough, but Leilah isn't willing to risk their lives on "thinks." She tells him to go on without her and take Seraphina and Arlo to L39. She adds that she'll meet up with them as soon as she can. Though her colleague is worried, Leilah assures that she'll be fine. With that settled, the teleporter grabs ahold of the two teenagers and tells them to brace themselves. Within moments, they are gone, and Leilah is left alone.

The three reappear in some industrial complex. The stranger collapses from exhaustive ability usage. Arlo wonders where they've been taken to. Seraphina assumes that it's far away, based on their rescuer's current condition. She also believes that, for the moment at least, they're safe.
