You are forbidden from attacking the Safe House.

- Vaughn prematurely ends John's latest crusade.

This is the 212th chapter of unORDINARY.

Synopsis[]

John picks up the unconscious Blyke and wonders why he of all people was always meddling in his affairs. John dismisses the thought and prepares to inflict further injury on this constant annoyance. However, he is interrupted by an order to stop. He turns to see that the voice came from Vaughn, who was accompanied by Keene. The headmaster tells John to put Blyke down. John ignores the order and raises his fist. Vaughn activates his own ability and uses it on John, who instantly falls to the ground paralyzed. With the rampage halted, Vaughn orders Keene to bring Blyke to the infirmary. As Keene carries Blyke to get treatment, he notices the shattered vial on the ground. Meanwhile, Vaughn tells John, who struggles in vain to move, to come to his office.

It is there that Vaughn tells John that no further attacks on Safe House were allowed. Unrepentant, John makes clear his feelings about Vaughn adding to the restrictions he established after his first crusade. When John mentions his belief that everyone in the club was plotting against him, Vaughn takes the opportunity to ask why he's so certain. John answers that it's because of his status as an outcast that nobody wants to answer to, so they're trying to avoid having to answer to him. Vaughn corrects John by saying that every transition of power is met with resistance, regardless of whether or not the new authority is an outcast. Power alone wouldn't make that resistance go away, so a new King would need to prove to his subjects that he was trustworthy. John, disgusted at the mere thought of owing his previous tormenters anything, retorts that if anything, they needed to work tirelessly to earn his favor. When Vaughn asks what John would give in return for their efforts, John makes it clear that that he owes them nothing. Vaughn thinks to himself how disappointed he is that his faith in John was misplaced. The headmaster reiterates to the King about the severe consequences of future attacks against the Safe House. In silent fury, John leaves the office and slams the door on his way out. Shortly thereafter, there's a knock at that door. Vaughn looks up to see Keene, who immediately remarks on the headmaster's dour countenance. Vaughn admits that he had high hopes for John ever since his enrollment interview. John wasn't just powerful, he was emphatic and charismatic as well. Though his actions since enrolling were questionable, they did result in motivating the other high-rankers to take more affirmative action. But to Vaughn's immense disappointment, rather than lead the school towards a better tomorrow, John was instead doing things that held it back. Vaughn regrettably admits that if this kept up, he'd have to put his faith in someone else. He decides to change the topic to finding out the reason for Keene's visit. The security head shows the headmaster the broken vial he collected and brought with him. Keene reports that there was once some kind of substance contained within. Moreover, the vial appeared to have been in Blyke's possession, and Keene advises that the student should be spoken to. Vaughn agrees, and demands to be informed the moment Blyke recovers.

At the school library, Arlo mulls over the turns his life has taken recently. He still can't figure out who the people that attacked them at John's House could be, let alone their motives or what they used to overpower the group that night. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out the invitation Seraphina had received. The scheduled day was upon them. There were two opposing stances he was counseled to take regarding his curiosity. On one hand, his aunt taught him to never lose faith that the Authorities would always take care of everything. One the other, three students, who couldn't be more different from each other, all shared a total distrust of those same Authorities. Arlo was torn between listening to Valerie, who told him not to waste his time on solving the mysteries the Authorities were working on, and Remi, who reasoned that it's not a waste if it's something you really want to do.

After he exits the building, Arlo gets a call from Elaine. She tells him something was going on with Seraphina following John's attack on the Safe House. After the initial shock of the news of the attack slightly diminishes, Elaine goes into detail about the primary reason for this emergency call. Seraphina was in the Safe House getting her injuries healed by Elaine while Isen watched over them. Eventually, Seraphina told them she had a request to make. After stepping into a private classroom, she tells the two of them about the invitation, and her intention to accept it in spite of the risks. She asks if one or both of them could come along with her as back up. Still shaken up over the deadly encounter with Volcan, Isen flat-out refused. Plus, he would be useless against a group that managed to best the combined might of Seraphina, John, Arlo, and Elaine. As for Elaine, she was against anybody going, and urged Seraphina not to put herself at risk. Alas, Seraphina did not let either of them talk her out of it, and decided she would go alone if she had to. Elaine begs Arlo to stop her. Teeth gritting, Arlo tells Elaine that he'll be over after school.

Seraphina is in the middle of getting ready when there's a knock on the door. Elaine opens it and is relieved to see Arlo. She welcomes him inside and frantically ushers him into Seraphina's room. Upon laying eyes on them, she asks if Arlo came to try and stop her too. Arlo replies that, in actuality, he's decided to accompany her after all.
