Plot[]
The big opening day for Safe House gets off to a rocky start. Isen shows the day's issue of the Wellston Weekly to his friends. Headlining the front page is an official decree from John: all Safe House members would be marked enemies of the school. Isen said it was obvious that Cecile would never have published this dreck unless she was forced to. Blyke seethes at John's latest act of spite, while Remi understands that his vow that Safe House would fail was one he would try actively upholding. Everyone at school becomes aware of John's newest threat, but most refuse to take it seriously. They figure that he couldn't possibly keep track of who joins what club, and nobody who planned to check out Safe House got cold feet.
Room 224 sees a big turnout, to Remi's joy. Blyke is annoyed that the crowd that resulted from their weeks of surveying comes as a surprise to Isen. Remi begins a public address to the students who have come.
She assures everyone that while it would take time to sort out the chaos that's enveloped their school, they could expect the Safe House always have its doors open for students seeking a haven. Even when she's not around, one of her trusted friends would oversee that everything runs smoothly. Remi highlights some of the things students could do during their time here. There were laptops they could use, desks to work (or sleep) at, board games to play, and beanbags in the corner for those who would prefer to read quietly. She tells all that they could do anything they wanted if they refrained from disturbing any other members.
With introductions complete, Remi invited all comers to partake whenever they pleased. At that moment who should walk in besides Zeke, the King's primary enforcer. He takes in the scene of students who are startled by his arrival. His attention soon gets focused on the top students who seem to be running the show around here. Though initially shaken, Zeke is confident that his affiliation with the King that took them all down would be enough to dissuade them from interfering with his mission. Remi expresses surprise that Zeke showed up, and kindly asks if he's come to join as well. Zeke scoffs at the thought of taking part in such a stupid club. Getting down to business, Zeke announces to everyone that his presence is in regards to the warning John sent out in the newspaper. Seeing as how nobody could have claimed not to hear it, Zeke has come to take the names of everybody who decided cross John by joining anyway. Remi is aghast that John continues to set new benchmarks for spite. An angry Blyke moves to throw Zeke out, but he is stopped by Arlo. The former King says that Remi needed to be the one to set the precedent for the club.
Seeing as how John's people were actively marking dissidents, the students who arrived begin having second thoughts. As Remi looks on in dismay at those who turned to leave, Zeke begins antagonizing some of the students who lingered. He harasses them for their names, but he's interrupted by the ticked-off Remi. She orders him to leave at once. Zeke coyly reminds her that the club flier said that all were welcome, and that kicking him out on Day One would constitute a violation of trust between her and club members. Remi responds by tasing him with a poke that brings him to his knees. She warns Zeke not to play games. Remi says that the Safe House welcomed all students regardless of their rank and history, because the chance to feel safe was a right everyone had. But if maintaining the safety of club members meant forcibly removing anybody who threatened their well-being, she would not hesitate to fulfill that responsibility. With that said, Remi forbids Zeke from ever taking the names of club members, and orders him out. Zeke bitterly stands to leave, as students gawk at his humiliation. Outside the classroom door, Zeke curses the gall that these "washed-up Royals" have to disrespect him. He becomes even more determined to help John crush the Safe House.
